Wherever You Go, There You Are

There is one person in your life that you spend every waking moment with – you even sleep with them. You spend all of your time with this person and it’s probably the person you know the least. That person is you! Wherever you go, there you are! No matter what you do, you can never get away from you. You eat with you, sleep with you, go to the bathroom with you and shower with you; yet, I dare say, it’s your least familiar relationship in spite of all those intimate moments.

Here is something to think about: If you want to have a happy, passionate and fulfilling life, then you must know yourself. You must have the kind of relationship with yourself where you know exactly who you are, what you desire, and what it will take to manifest that desire. So, stop, take a breath and ask yourself if you truly know who you are and what it will take to create a passionate and fulfilling life. Chances are the answer is no. You have no idea who you truly are, you have no idea what it is you truly desire, and you have no idea how to bridge that gap. Yet, you enter into relationships with others – be it platonic or intimate – and you expect them to know all of those answers about you.

If there is a disconnect in your relationship with yourself, then it stands to reason that there will be a disconnect in other relationships and other areas in your life as well. If you know what you desire, ? I remember when I first asked myself that question. It was like having ice water thrown at me. It was shocking because I didn’t know the answer, therefore I didn’t know myself. I merely existed, living a life by default, walking around on autopilot. I had no goals, no plans, no intentions for my life. My life was dictated by my external circumstances – when something happened to me, I would point the finger of blame at my circumstance, never taking any responsibility for my own life. I was a first class victim of circumstances and I played the part well!
The moment I learned that I was responsible for my life and everything in it, first, I got angry, then I got serious. I had to know who it was I was spending all my time with; I had to finally get to know me! Once I stopped blaming my circumstances and took full responsibility for my life – all of my life – the tide  turned and my life made a major shift. You mean to tell me I have control over my circumstances? Yes, it’s called choice. I can choose how to behave in any circumstance – either I can react out of fear, or I can respond in love. The choice is mine.

The good news is you also have that choice. I know it is so much easier to sit and wallow, blaming anything and anyone who crosses your path for your lack luster life. But how’s that working for you? I know, it’s not! For the next 30 days, make a conscious effort to journal each morning one thing you like about yourself – no matter how small it may seem. You smile a lot; you like giving flowers to your co-workers; you wait patiently in traffic jams; you love to sing; you make a mean double chocolate fudge cake! Then journal your gratitude for that trait you like about yourself: “I am so happy and grateful that I can make my co-workers happy when I bring my fudge brownies on Fridays!”

On the 31st day, re-read your 30-Day Journey on knowing yourself. Then, stop, take a breath and ask yourself: “Who am I?” I’ll give you a hint: you are a wonderful and uniquely-made divine expression. No one has ever been or will ever be quite like you. You have incarnated at this time because the world needs what you have deep inside. Playing small and not knowing yourself, not only diminishes you but it deprives the world of your very special gifts.
After 30 days, you will have created a new spiritual practice. You then have the choice to continue indefinitely – until you are so familiar and intimate with yourself, building and growing a passionate and powerful relationship with yourself. Do this practice until you are so strong in the belief that you are a divine expression and you are here to deliver a divine message to the world. The choice is yours, no one else’s. It’s your life, no one else’s. Remember, wherever you go, there you are!
