The Key To Single-Mindedness

The first time I was completely focused on one goal was when I made a decision to study in the UK. At that time I was doing below average at school and nobody thought I would get into the local college, let alone going abroad to study at the university.

I would probably have the destiny that everyone expected me to have if I wouldn’t be awakened by one change in my life. When I was 16 I got employed by my mother (who is a shopping centre director) to be a shopping assistant. That job was absolutely horrible with long shifts and little pay and I swore that I would do good at school and go to study abroad, to get as further away from such life as possible.

At that time I still thought that if I do good at school I will do good in life, and that belief served me well for a couple of years. However if I wouldn’t have decided to do better at school, that belief could have ruined my life completely.

So because of this horrible employment I firmly decided to become the best student in the subjects that I needed to score well to get accepted to the university abroad. I selected only one university to apply to and I dedicated most of my time to qualify for the grant it offered.

In the first year I became the best pupil of English and I graduated with the highest grade as well as the best exam result in the entire capital. I scored 100% for my English state exam and therefore got a grant. When I was on the plane to UK I was thinking about what made me so single-minded about this particular goal as the goals I set before were all unrealised.

Here are some of the things that I’ve identified.

The most important requirement for becoming single-minded is…

A very strong desire

If you don’t desire to change your life or achieve some goal, you won’t. It’s vitally important to absolutely want to change or improve your life. If I would vaguely wished to come to study in UK, I would probably still be in Lithuania working as a sales girl.

A weak desire is one of the biggest reasons why people don’t manifest what they visualise. A weak desire means you have a split mind. Split mind has divided energy which cancels each other out thus making you stuck in life. A strong desire, on the other hand, implies a unified mind. When your thoughts, actions and words are directed to the same purpose, you must achieve your desire.

If you have a weak desire it may take ages for you to achieve it or you might never see it materialising. When you are completely focused on one goal, however, you will feel the momentum building which strengthens your faith until you absolutely know that you will achieve your desire.

Another thing that is required to create a state of single-mindedness is…

A sense of urgency

I studied very hard for two years because that was the time left till my final exams. This limited time created a sense of urgency which is necessary for you to focus completely on the work at hand. If you have no time limit, you will tend to procrastinate and engage in activities that don’t lead you to your goal or even take you away from it.

If you don’t have a sense of urgency to achieve your goals, create one. This could be your age, your worsening health or your poor financial situation. Find the reason you should hurry up to achieve your goal by a certain date.

Another thing that is required for such state is…

The control of your mind

If you listen to others and take action as a result of the requests or opinions of others, it’s very unlikely that you will achieve any of your goals. If you want to become single-minded, you need to reclaim your brain. To do that, stop listening to others, stop watching TV and seeking the opinions of anyone else but yourself.

Listen to your own inner voice and make your own decisions. I know it can be hard to do that if you’ve been listening to others all your life, but if you’re not happy where the advice of others have got you, it’s time to listen to yourself.

Even if you think that you don’t make wise decisions, still decide about everything yourself. Yes, you will make mistakes, but they will make you a wiser person once you go through them. If you don’t make mistakes you don’t get smarter, thus mistakes help you develop your intelligence.

Block all the influences and use your own head. Once you do, you will notice that others will start seeking your guidance. Then you will realise how few people actually use their own minds – all most do is seek someone else to make decisions for them.

Once you gain control over your mind, you need to…

Get very specific about what you want

When I was planning to come to UK, I didn’t hope to get to Any university – I had a specific university in mind and focused all my efforts to get into it. When my friends asked what universities I applied to and they’ve found out that I’ve applied only to one, they thought I was crazy. But I absolutely knew that I will get into it so I didn’t feel any insecurity in making such step.

This is how specific you have to get because specific goals create faith and finally certainty that they will be achieved. Also, definite goals make you inspired to take specific actions that will make those goals manifest. Remember, you create material things out of energy that your thoughts and your body use, so make sure your creation is exactly what you want it to be. Being specific, therefore, lets you achieve exactly what you want.

Finally, there’s only one requirement left for the creation of single-mindedness. And that is…

You have to be patient

You absolutely must stick to your goal no matter what. Appearances are almost always deceiving, so never be disappointed if you don’t see any results. Sometimes when you get determined to achieve some goal it seems that everything that can go wrong does go wrong. But this is just a universal way of reorganising things to make your goal finally come true.

Only those who don’t give up and face the adversities with unwavering faith finally achieve them. So no matter what happens, stick to your goal because…

Knock and the door shall be opened unto you.

That’s all that is required to create the mindset that will allow you to achieve any goal and make any changes you want in life. However most people never develop such mindset because they want everything now and are unwilling to put some extra time to get more meaningful results. I hope that this will not be the case with you and that you will sacrifice some of your time to reap the rewards that single-mindedness brings.
